Don Maloney grew up in New York City.  During WWII he was drafted into the army.  As the war in Europe was drawing to a conclusion in late 1944-1945, but certainly not over, Don was sent to France with other replacement troops.  He recalls watching the Germans surrender with their hands up in the air as they approached the lines where his unit was dug in.

After the war, Don chose to stay in the army and he was assigned to the 2nd Army Headquarters stateside. During the Korea War, he served in the signal battalion in operational support of the war effort while stationed in Japan.  Later in his career he was assigned duty as maintenance supervisor of nuclear weapons support–a position that brought him to the Pittsburgh area, and he admits, for which he had no qualifications or experience.  That’s how the army does things sometimes, says the 25 year veteran warrant officer.
