Irma Ryan was a teenager living in a small town in Bavaria, Germany, during World War II.  As a German citizen, she supported Hitler and did what she could to help with the war effort.  As the oldest child of a father who was drafted at age 36 and sent to the Russian Front, Irma helped provide for her family as food and clothing grew scarce.  She escaped the Allied bombings and the strafing of one British fighter pilot who seemed intent to shoot her down by the River Main.  She entertained wounded German soldiers with her accordion and, after the American army reached Germany, she hid two such soldiers in her house, an act punishable by death.  She eventually worked for the American occupation government and married a GI named Bob Ryan.
